How to Become a Computer Technician

Computer technicians provide technical support for hardware, software and computer systems. A computer technician’s responsibilities will vary by company and employer, but generally involve tasks such as servicing hardware, diagnosing software problems, and maintaining all of the company’s technical components. They are also very familiar with the different networking and operating systems. Computer technicians are an integral part of the information technology industry.

Computer Technician Education Requirements

Hiring employers will be most interested in computer technicians who have had some sort of formal training in information technology. Most computer technicians have at least earned an associate’s degree, although more people are earning bachelor’s degrees as competition for job opportunities increases. Some employers may require industry certification in addition to basic IT training. If becoming a computer technician is your career goal, you should start by enrolling in an IT training or degree program.

Job Opportunities for Computer Technicians

Given our dependency on computers, the experienced, tech-intuitive computer technician may be the most valuable employee of the century. There is high demand for computer technicians which means that there will excellent opportunities for employment. Computer technicians who have earned degrees in computer science, information technology, or another related field will see the best job opportunities, higher wages and promotions.
