Computer Security degrees prepare individuals to implement and manage security systems to prevent cyber attacks on computer networks. Computer security specialists will install security software, respond immediately to cyber attacks, and monitor computer systems for any security breaches.

A Computer Security associate’s degree will prepare students to protect data and computer systems from hackers and malicious attacks. Graduates of a Computer Security degree manage computer networks first hand, and are responsible for responding to an attack. Job opportunities for graduates of an associate’s degree include network security specialist, database administrator, and computer support technician.

A Computer Security bachelor’s degree will prepare individuals to operate, maintain, and protect computers from hackers and viruses at a more advanced level. Areas like disaster recovery and firewall expertise are just some of the specialized skills covered during this four year program. Graduates of a bachelor’s Computer Security degree qualify for jobs as IT managers, computer support specialists, systems administrators, computer design specialists, or lead security investigators.

There are also master’s degree programs in computer security, and require anywhere from 2-5 years of study. The master’s degree in computer security provides specialized training and focuses on database design, security software design, engineering cryptology, and network security. Graduates of a master’s degree in computer security qualify for jobs as an IT director, computer security consultant, or private consultant.

Doctorate level degrees are available in computer security, and the educational focus is on theory and statistics. Students studying for a doctorate Computer Security degree may train to be cyber-terrorism or computer forensic specialists. Individuals with a doctorate degree in computer security are qualified to work as computer logisticians, advanced software engineers, or lead computer security directors.

Job Opportunities for Computer Security Specialists

As people continue to use technology and the Internet for obtaining information and communicating with one another, there will be a need for computer security specialists. More malicious attacks on computer systems are occurring in recent years, so the need for trained individuals to protect our computer networks is necessary. Computer security specialists in an entry-level position may earn between $34,706 and $46,192 annually. Computer security specialists with at least five years experience can earn up to $83,723 a year.
