Law Enforcement/Firefighting
Are you working in law enforcement or as a fire fighter already? If so, advanced education may help you get a promotion to a supervisory position. Increasingly, municipalities expect entering police officers to have some training beyond high school as well. Some fire departments require that fire fighters have emergency medical training. There’s plenty of competition for all of these jobs.

The career ladder for firefighters is often promotion to engineer, lieutenant, captain, battalion chief, assistant chief, and then fire chief. Although most fire fighters work for municipalities, some specialize in handling hazardous materials or fighting forest fires.
Most police officers work for local government, but there are many other types of law enforcement officials. They work as FBI agents, Federal Air Marshals, immigration inspectors, U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) agents, customs inspectors, and U.S. Secret Service special agents.
