At colleges and universities, academic administrative positions include college president, provost, academic deans, department heads, and chairpersons. Typically, academics hold advanced degrees in the subject area in which they specialize. Administrators who support students by directing areas such as student affairs, financial aid, and admissions do not have a higher degree in an academic specialty. A master’s or doctoral degree in education administration or leadership can help all of these people enter an administrative position.
