Principalship Studies
Most states require that school principals be licensed as school administrators. Usually that means you need a master’s degree or other graduate-level education. You may also have to take continuing education classes to maintain your certification. Private school principals do not need to be certified, but they often hold master’s degrees or Ph.Ds.

School principals often begin their careers as teachers. A typical route to a principal’s job is to complete a master’s or doctoral degree. Some candidates move directly into principal jobs. Others work first as assistant principals or other administrators such as department head or curriculum specialist. New administrators sometimes work one-on-one with a mentor to learn the ropes.
