School Counseling
School counselors work with students from elementary school through college age. They help young people make decisions and manage problems related to academic goals, personal issues, social development, and career choices. School counselors also serve as advocates for young people, making sure that they have opportunities to succeed in ways that suit their talents, needs, and personalities.

School counseling programs teach you how to evaluate students, do academic and career counseling, handle crises, and coach students who need help with interpersonal skills. If you’re interested in working with older students, you may want to focus on job and college search skills.
Most schools expect counselors to have a master’s degree, and public school counselors need to have a state counseling certificate as well. Other requirements vary between states. Some require both a teaching and a counseling certificate. Others require counselors to have teaching experience. Be sure to check your state’s requirements as you plan your new career.
