Teaching, Elementary

Today’s elementary school teachers don’t just present information in front of a classroom. They use group discussions, hands-on activities, and computer learning, often to teach a standardized curriculum to their students.

Elementary school programs cover the pedagogical approaches to teaching math, language arts, science, and social studies. You’ll learn to plan activities, assess students’ learning, work with diverse student populations, and maintain an appropriate classroom environment. Practice teaching is an essential part of all teacher training.

All states require public school teachers to be certified, but most don’t have this requirement for private school teachers. To become licensed, you need to hold a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teaching program, and practice teach. Elementary school teaching licenses may cover early childhood (kindergarten through third grade) or the elementary school teaching (grades 1 through 6 or 8).
