Counseling

Licensing requirements vary by state and specialty, but typically counselors hold master’s degrees. Therefore, most counseling programs are master’s or doctor of psychology (Psy.D.) programs. They give you the educational background you need to help people solve problems related to personal issues, family dynamics, mental health, and employment. Some job areas in counseling include school counseling, rehabilitation counseling, mental health counseling, substance abuse, marriage and family therapy, geriatric counseling, and genetic counseling.

To become a licensed clinical psychologist, you need a doctoral degree in most states. You can specialize in clinical psychology, counseling, school psychology, industrial-organizational psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, or research.
