Court Reporting/Stenography

Would you like to be a “fly on the wall” in a courtroom? Court reporting and stenography programs teach you the different methods of reporting legal proceedings, speeches, meetings, and other events. More and more, court reporters and stenographers work in closed captioning and translating for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

You can learn a variety of technologies to be a court reporter. Most court reporters use a stenotype machine to record letters, words, phrases, and sounds. The text is then processed using an electronic method called computer-aided transcription (CAT). Another technique is electronic reporting. This involves making an audio recording of court procedures and then transcribing it. In another method, voice writing, a court reporter speaks into a voice-silencing mask to make an audio record of the proceedings.
