CT scan/MRI/X-ray Technician

Technicians use a variety of imaging techniques to diagnose injuries and other medical conditions. CT (computerized tomography), MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and ultrasound are sophisticated radiographic technologies that require advanced training. CT technologists learn to create cross-sectional images. MRI technologists learn to create images with instrumentation that uses strong magnets and radio waves.

Many types of programs teach these skills. You can become a radiographer through a certificate, associate, or bachelor’s degree program. Normally, training for a specialty like CT or MRI requires an additional year beyond that. You can become a sonographer through either an associate or bachelor’s program, although two-year programs are most common. A master’s degree is a good choice if you want to advance to a supervisory position.
