Medical Office Billing and Coding Specialist

Students in the Medical Office Billing and Coding Specialist diploma program study medical terminology as it relates to various anatomical systems and related infirmities. Students study coding and prepare insurance claim forms both manually and by computer. They also practice documentation skills.

Graduates of this program will perform administrative duties in many areas of a medical office, including front office, specialty departments and office management. Graduates find employment in entry-level positions at hospitals, clinics, doctors’ offices, insurance companies, HMOs, nursing homes, schools, and rehabilitation centers with job titles such as Medical Receptionist, Medical Secretary, Medical Office Manager, Medical Biller/Coder, and Medical Records Clerk.

Externships

Many programs offered at Tucson College include an externship at an approved site upon completion of the required coursework. The externship provides the student with an actual work environment in which to apply skills learned in the classroom.
