Diploma - Surgical Technology
The Surgical Technology program exposes students to a general orientation of the operating room environment and an understanding of the necessary standards in the field, including sterilization and contamination. Students will be provided with hands-on clinical experiences in an active hospital setting, and become familiar with and perform routine procedures during the process of surgery. Duties for the graduates of this program may include anticipating the needs of the surgeon, providing instruments and supplies to the surgeon as well as being responsible for the maintenance of the sterile field as a Scrub Technologist in surgery. Graduates may assist the surgeon by providing retraction and aiding exposure of the operative site, facilitating hemostasis, performing suctioning, irrigation, and sponging, assisting with suturing and stapling as well as securing drainage systems and dressings. Graduates who successfully complete this program will be able to take certification examinations sponsored by the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist (LCC/ST) and the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
